1914 Haunted Jailhouse Explore | "Looks Like Alcatraz" | Prisoner Ghost Stories, Attempted Escape | Chester County Historical Society Museum | Part 2 of 2
Story Description:
In Part 2, we leave the main museum area and pass through a cold, locked door that leads into the different levels of the old prison in Chester, South Carolina. From the moment that door closes behind us, the atmosphere changes, and the weight of the building’s past becomes immediately apparent.
I was anxious to see what condition the historic jailhouse would be in, and it did not disappoint. The structure remains much as it stood when it first opened in 1914, worn by time yet preserved in a way that allows its chilling remnants of the past to linger in every corridor, cell, and stairway.

More Story Details:
My guide, Liz, knows this haunted corrections facility inside and out. The jail still sits both above and below the museum, frozen in time, and she fills me in on many of the eerie stories connected to its history and its present day reputation. Among them is the tale of the most well known former inmate, Billy, a prisoner who spent years locked up here and is said to still visit often. Numerous accounts tell of his voice being heard echoing through the jail.
One particular story is shared by Liz in this video, a story that has stayed with her over the years. As the Administrator of the Chester County Historical Society Museum, Liz is not only our guide but also a true fountain of knowledge during any visit here. And I can guarantee that her firsthand account is every bit as chilling as you might expect.
