Perilous Passage Through Pungo | The Black Bears of the Coastal Plains
Story Description:
We return to one of our favorite places to observe large black bears thriving in their natural habitat, the Pungo Unit of Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. This remote and wild stretch of coastal North Carolina has become a familiar and exciting destination for us, especially during bear mating season when sightings can be truly unforgettable.
Upon arrival, we quickly discover that road conditions throughout the refuge are in poor shape. Soft ground, deep ruts, and water covered stretches turn what should be a simple drive into a risky decision.
