We had the pleasure of witnessing the entire Yule Log Procession as it made its way down the Duke of Gloucester Street, a historic thoroughfare lined with colonial homes, shops, and twinkling holiday lights. The procession culminated at Market Square, where the log was set ablaze in a roaring bonfire, sending sparks dancing into the cool December night sky. Along the way, the Lighting of the Cressets illuminated the streets with a warm glow, adding to the magical ambiance of the evening.
This mystical celebration is filled with centuries-old traditions, from musket fire and Fife and Drum music to Christmas carols and Father Christmas’ jolly presence. One of the most cherished customs is the tossing of a sprig of greenery into the fire, a symbolic gesture meant to bring good wishes and luck for the year ahead. The combination of history, community, and festive cheer creates an experience that is both heartwarming and unforgettable.
We were thrilled to attend the first of three Yule Log Celebrations in 2021, capturing every moment to share with you. Watching the procession, the bonfire, and the joyful participants, it is easy to feel as if you are truly part of this time-honored tradition.
